James Mercer Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. Langston Hughes was the back child of Caroline Mercer Langston and James Nathaniel Hughes. Hughess father by and by left the family and divorced his mother, later on the separation of his parents, Hughes was raised mainly by his maternal grandmother, Mary Patterson Langston, in Lawrence, Kansas. Like around African Americans at the time, his grandmother instilled into him a lasting mother wit of racial pride and honor. After spending most of his childishness in Lawrence, Kansas, his grandmother passed away. Around the time his grandmother passed away, Hughes began nurture more and books.

Hughes moved to Cleveland, Ohio with his mother, where he attend high school, he wrote for the school newspaper, edited the familybook, and began to write his first short stories, poetry, and melodramatic plays. After high school, Hughes attended Columbia University for a year and left due to racial prejudice. After traveling abroad, Hughes returned and attended Lincoln University, where he earned a B.A. degree and he returned to New York. He completed his first novel, Not Without Laughter, after graduating, which won the Harmon gold medal for literature.
Hughes, who claimed Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Carl Sandburg, and Walt Whitman as his indigenous influences, is particularly known for his insightful, colorful portrayals of black life in America from the twenties through the sixties.
