Life in Tennessee
It is the year 1871 and I am enjoying my last days, out in the south clip under the tulip poplar trees watching all of the yearlings running active and kicking up their heels, for that is what spring is all about. I am now a very old, tired and proud herd mare of 39 years, but I have non always been a brood mare and most sure enough have not always been proud. In my lifetime I have witnessed the comings and goings of many horses and many more slaves, some were my friends. I can mobilize heard talk about golf-club presidents of this great country, five of which visited here at Belle Meade, some devout and others not so much. I have seen my state go to war and Mr. Hardings slaves set free. As the sale approaches I will be gathering in the yearlings as I have for the last 4 years and telling them my story. My mama, a beautiful chestnut, thoroughbred brood mare named, Shilohs Cashmere in Blue, was acquired around the same time as the slave, Patrick who was inherited in 1810 by Mr. John Harding when his father Giles Harding passed away. The two were relocated to the Belle Meade Plantation just west of Nashville, Tennessee.
What I remember most about my mama were the stories that she told me about the people who had come to Belle Meade and how folks would talk about the magnificent horses here anytime surmount Harding went into town. She died on a cold March morning tether months after I was born in 1836. My master, Mr. John Harding indomitable that morning that a black filly with an unknown sire wouldnt amount to much without the help of her mother, so he go me from my regal surroundings to a shack down by the slave quarters, gave me the working name, Little Miss Lizzy, and work I did!
